Before your first class
Questions families ask
What age can a child start?
From age 8 in the youth ensembles. Adults can start at any age, and the adult starters class is for grown-ups who have never played.
How long is a class?
Ensemble classes run an hour to an hour and a half. Private lessons are 30, 45 or 60 minutes.
Do I need my own pan?
No. The pans are the school's and stay in the pan room. A set to practice on at home is a rental and an extra; ask your teacher before you rent or buy.
Which instruments does the band play?
Tenor pans, double seconds, guitar pans, cello pans and bass pans, with a rhythm section of drum kit, congas and a scraper.
What level should I start at?
Almost everyone starts in First strokes, whatever their age. If you have played before, a teacher listens at your first class and suggests a level.
Can a parent sit in?
Yes, at the back of the room for a first class and on open rehearsal days.
Do students have to play in the parade or in concerts?
No. They are invitations. Players join when they and their teacher agree they are ready, and some prefer to stay in the pan room.
What happens when a class is missed?
A private lesson is made up when you give a day's notice. Ensemble classes are not made up, but your teacher sends the week's part.
How does tuition work?
It depends on the ensemble and how often you play. The page on how tuition works lists what sets it, and the figures are on our enrollment page.
